PSA: If an album has a Dolby Atmos mix, the stereo downmix might actually sound better than the lossless FLAC

Inspired by this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/musichoarder/comments/1spejs3/decline_of_dynamic_range_and_increase_in_loudness/

I recently got an Atmos mix of an album out of curiosity, and noticed that the stereo downmix sounded substantially better than the lossless version I already had. That led me to make the following comparison with a couple of popular albums:

**Ghost — Meliora**: The FLAC (CD master) sits around −7 to −8 LUFS integrated, with true peaks hitting +1.5 to +3.5 dBTP on most tracks — that's above 0 dBFS, meaning actual clipping baked into the master. The M4A stereo downmix from the Atmos version on Apple Music clusters tightly around −17 LUFS with peaks around −3 to −5 dBTP. No clipping, more dynamic.

**Bad Bunny — Un Verano Sin Ti**: Same story, even wider gap. FLACs all jammed between −7 and −11 LUFS with peaks above 0. M4As range from −18 to −23 LUFS depending on the track, with clean peaks well below 0.

These results confirm what are obvious when listening to each version - the stereo Atmos downmixes are significantly more dynamic and sound DRAMATICALLY better than the official, overly loud versions.

The takeaway is to check to see if some of your favorite music is available in dolby atmos. Grab that version if you can, and check to see how it compares with the lossless versions. It might sound better to your ears!
