Manufacturing and production
As a Small & Medium Enterprise owner in manufacturing, I genuinely want to understand how others are solving the growing skilled labour and discipline challenge.
One major issue we face today is mobile phone usage during working hours.
If companies restrict mobile phones on the shop floor:
- Employees often feel unhappy or leave the job.
- Many say they cannot work without constant phone access.
If companies allow unrestricted phone usage:
- Productivity drops.
- Reels and social media consume working time.
- Quality issues increase.
- Machine attention reduces.
- Training efficiency suffers.
This is not about blaming workers. Everyone has pressures, stress, family responsibilities, and changing lifestyles. But manufacturing also requires focus, consistency, safety, and discipline.
Sometimes I wonder:
How are countries like Vietnam and China maintaining such high manufacturing productivity and skill discipline at scale?
Surely they must also face similar human and social challenges.
For MSMEs especially, this becomes critical because:
- Margins are already thin.
- One quality mistake can cost export orders.
- Skilled labour is difficult to retain.
- Continuous retraining increases costs.
So the real question is:
How can MSMEs create a modern work culture that balances:
- employee freedom,
- mental comfort,
- productivity,
- skill development,
- and manufacturing discipline?
Would appreciate practical experiences from:
- factory owners,
- HR professionals,
- production managers,
- and even workers themselves.
What systems are actually working today?
