The project involves filming in archives in Kolkata and industrial/rural sites in the Raniganj coal belt. I’m looking for a local fixer or a student filmmaker who can help with:

• Navigating local administrative/mining permissions in Raniganj.
• Managing gear in heavy monsoon conditions.
• Assisting with local Bengali/Hindi translation for short oral-history interviews.

Hi everyone, I’m an Indo-Trinidadian filmmaker currently based in Vietnam. In late July, I’m traveling to Kolkata and Raniganj to film the first part of a trilogy: “The Absence of Origin: Fragments of a Shared Journey.”

My ancestor (Haroon Khan) left the Raniganj coal belt for the Caribbean in the late 1800s. Has anyone here successfully navigated the West Bengal State Archives or visited the Raniganj/Asansol area for family research? I’m looking for any "lessons learned" or specific contacts in India who helped you bridge the gap between the ship registers and the actual village of origin.

My goal is to trace 19th-century labor migration pathways—specifically investigating how the Raniganj coal belt intersected with indenture routes to the Caribbean. I’m looking to connect with anyone who has a foot in the world of West Bengal archives, industrial history, or local heritage.
