Living off-campus first year—how much will I miss out socially?

Hey everyone, I’m an incoming first year for Smith commerce, and I recently found out that I’ll most likely have to live off-campus for first year because my family and I can’t really afford the cost of res at this moment.

I’ve been feeling worried about missing out on the “Queen’s experience,” especially since I’ve heard that most first years live on campus and make a lot of their friends through residence. As a commerce student, I’ve also heard the program can feel pretty social/tight-knit, which makes me nervous about being left out.

I’d say I’m fairly extroverted and social, and I also won’t be living super far from campus, but I’m still worried that I’ll miss out on a lot socially or have a harder time making friends and connections.

For anyone who lived off-campus in first year at Queen’s, especially in commerce (or any program), how was your experience? Did you still feel involved socially? Was it harder to meet people, or did things work out fine after classes/clubs/events started? I’m planing on attending every event and clubs I can.

Any advice/input would help a lot!
Cheers
