Help with print

I have this print I took with my Canon A1 and TMax 400 (or trix 400, I can't remember) and have been working on this print a bit. I got a pretty good result at the public darkroom with a #1 contrast filter and dodging the bottom for 50% of the exposure.

I got my own enlarger, different than what I had been using, and tried some split grade contrast. I'm looking to minimize the dodge/burn and get the right look, but not sure if I'm heading down the right path.

Exposure details:

- f16

- #0 for 70 seconds (seems grainy and too light still)

- #5 for 15 (still a tad dark)

- Ilford paper and chems

70 seconds for the highlights seems excessive, but I could be wrong. Would it be better to use different contrast filters? Or opening up a bit? Or just use a single grade and dodge as needed? I'm just not the best at using masks yet, but gotta practice sometime!

Any suggestions on what to try next would be awesome!

Is doing a test paper for split grade printing like this a good way to figure out what you need?

I've been watching some videos on split grade contrast printing and most curious if this is a pretty decent method. I wasn't sure if it pans out the way it looks it does on this video. I know my photos can have random light and dark spots so if it doesn't line up in the square that I'm looking for, how would I know which combination to use?
