I am getting some 20 foot boards to install on this old frame tomorrow. Finished tearing out the old boards and nails a while ago and overall everything looks to be in good shape except two 4x4s that have some minor rotting. I may add an extra post on these locations and nail or screw to the adjacent joist just as extra support.
The original board furthest from the house was flush with the rim joist, so I'm planning to do the same and work back in toward the house. Going to use the camo hidden fasteners this time.
I left the board closest to the house in because I didn't want to bother with the siding in order to pry it out, and will decide what to do with it when I get there. I might leave it if the new boards line up just right with it at the end, or figure out how to remove it if I need to.
I will finish stairs and railing later. I was just worried about the main deck at this point so we can use it now. Technically it's not high enough to require railing any way. I am considering post sleeves and metal or vinyl railing instead of wood. Again, TBD.
Other than that am I missing anything or should I do anything else before installing the new decking?
I am pulling all of my boards to replace them and found a few rotted spots, especially where the lower stair 2x6 butts up to the lower deck 2x4. Also found some of the sleepers on the ground level portion to be rotted. The lower part sits directly on concrete. My guess is water just wasn't able to drain off the concrete slab.
I will replace the rotted wood with new PT wood. Aside from that, is there anything I should do to prevent this rot on the future?
For context this deck is about 14 years old.
