Not eating sugar and bread

I'm an overweight teen girl who has been trying to lose weight for years. Is it a good idea to stop eating sugar (sweets, chocolate...) and bread and also walk 10 000 steps a day? I'm 85 kg and would like to get down to 70 or 65. Does anyone have similar experiences or tips?
