New golfer (tall) — should I invest in fitted clubs before I even know if I like it?

I’ve watched golf for years and really enjoy it, and I’m finally at a point where I have the time and money to start playing regularly. The problem is I’ve barely actually played.

A few times I’ve gone out and used rental/standard clubs, and as a pretty tall guy, it’s messed with my back quite a bit and just felt awkward overall.

So I’m kind of stuck…I don’t want to drop a bunch of money on properly fitted clubs if I end up not loving the game, but I also feel like using ill-fitting clubs might give me a bad experience from the start.

What’s the best way to approach this?

Should I:

Get a basic/cheap set that’s closer to my size?

Do a fitting right away?

Or just tough it out with standard clubs for a while?

Would appreciate any advice, especially from other taller golfers who started from scratch.
