How much variation is actually accepted in Spinosaurus skull reconstructions?

I’ve seen quite a bit of variation in different Spinosaurus aegyptiacus skull reconstructions, especially regarding crest shape and overall proportions.

(This image is just something I came across — not my models 😅)

Given how fragmentary the material is, and that some specimens have historically been mixed or reassigned, I’m curious:

– How much variation in skull shape is actually supported by current research?

– How much of what we see in reconstructions is interpretation?

– Are some of these more extreme crest shapes actually supported by fossil material?

I’ve made a Spinosaurus model that I’m pretty happy with, and I’m wondering whether differences like a more pronounced crest would be within expected variation, or if they would require fundamentally different underlying anatomy 😅

I’m trying to stay as accurate as possible for modeling, so any solid references or papers would be hugely appreciated 🙌

Updated Therizinosaurus head based on your feedback, is this more accurate?

Updated Therizinosaurus head based on your feedback, is this more accurate?

Thanks for all the feedback on my previous Therizinosaurus post yesterday, I really appreciate it 🙌

I tried to implement as much as possible, especially:
– A more rounded, beak-like snout
– Less “predatory” shaping overall
– Improved jaw alignment, so the upper beak closes slightly over the lower (both front and side)
– Added more soft tissue and jaw musculature to reduce the “shrink-wrapped” look
– Smoothed out the beak to give it a more bird-like appearance

I’d love to hear if this is closer to what you’d expect, or if there are still things I should adjust

For reference: left is the new version, right is the previous version

Really appreciate all the help so far!
