What makes a 'The Exorcist' movie at this point? Could they just make a movie about an exorcism and market it as 'The Exorcist'?

In order to use 'The Exorcist' in the title does it have to include characters from the previous movies or books?

Evil Dead rise did great box office and got great reviews but every time a new movie surfaces they ditch the entire creative teams and start fresh. Wouldn't it make sense to bring back the people that made those movies work?
