Group camping in Monongahela NF
Hey there!
I’m planning to group camp with about 10 friends of mixed camping experience near or within Monongahela National Forest in September. I’m aiming to do a scoping trip this September 2026 with the hopes of doing the whole big thing September 2027. We want to visit Dolly Sods, Gaundineer Scenic Area, and maybe hit up a horseback trail.
Wondering if there are any experienced goers out there who know of relatively private, but not necessarily primitive, campground/group campsite that’s unique to the area. I love the idea of a fire tower, waterfront views, or a good eyeline to the ridge. Preferably something I can reserve, rather than FCFS.
Ideally with access to a bathroom (primitive is fine) but I know that’s already a lot of criteria to navigate. Most of us would be tent or car camping, so a site that can hold that many cars/tents is ideal.
We don’t want to be butted up against other families and kids at a popular campground but, again, I know the criteria is already restrictive :)
