diagnostic help

Hey all.

I’ve got a completely stock automatic d15b carbed 35m EF. when I first got the car drove completely fine, but I noticed when I unbolted the muffler it would show the catalytic converter light on the dash, but it would resolve as soon as it was back together. Fast forward a couple of months, I was driving and the cat light had come on and stayed on, after this happened I noticed many things. My oil temp always stayed normal as well.

- My ECU (OBD-0) would throw a code
- My fuel efficiency was fucking awful
- My car would overheat and stall and die while driving (rarely)
- I had a mate borrow my exhaust hangars for WOF and when I zip-tied my exhaust the car would die and refuse to move unless I had the original hangar back on
- My rpms would fluctuate in drive, become really low in reverse (and sometimes stall), become higher in neutral.

Last night I decided to gut my cat completely, I noticed that it looked completely fine but still went along with it to see if it would make a difference. I also cleaned both o2 sensors by running it through an ultrasonic cleaner, and gapped my spark plugs. The only problem I ran into was my spark plugs were completely covered in oil when I took them out, so I’m ordering a new rocker cover gasket and spark plug seals.

After doing this, my car had the same problems but worse, my exhaust was leaking substantially even though I’d put the gaskets back in, and the engine sputtered when I turned off the car. My ECU stopped throwing code completely, but the light on my dash is still there.

I’m not so worried about the light, I’m assuming I’ll just need to replace the o2 sensor, but how am I having all the same issues with no catalytic converter and how is it seemingly way worse than before?!?

Please, let me know what I can do to fix this issue because it’s driving me nuts.
