the big difference is that this error means your activation client can't talk to a key management service, which is common if you accidentally installed a volume license version. if you're staring at that $0 activation state that won't budge, the fix is usually just pointing windows back to the standard microsoft activation servers via terminal. so grab your retail key and use the slmgr /upk command to wipe the old stuck state first.
