Running a psychology practice vs. a coaching business — here's what nobody tells you
I've run both a psychology practice and a coaching business, and the difference is massive.
As a psychologist, clients can come to you through insurance coverage — the acquisition channel is largely built in. Coaching is a completely different game. You have to build and execute a solid marketing strategy from scratch, or clients simply won't find you.
And here's the reality: most clients don't come from your website. They come from social media — primarily Instagram and Facebook.
The real key is building a content funnel that works in three stages:
- Awareness — your content helps people recognize their own problem
- Connection — they see that you've faced similar struggles yourself, which builds trust
- Conversion — they feel safe enough to book a free trial session
That last step is everything. A low-commitment first session removes the biggest barrier to entry and is consistently the most effective way to convert a follower into a paying client. Drop your experience below — I'd love to hear how others navigated this difference. Have you found a channel that works better than social media for getting coaching clients?
