Weather U-Turn: Massive Ridge to Bring Summer Heat and Dry Skies

A nice dip in the jet stream

An upper-level trough is bringing cooler, cloudier weather and scattered showers to the region this evening, with temperatures 10–15 degrees below average. However, a major pattern shift begins this weekend as high pressure moves offshore, ushering in a significant warming trend with highs reaching the low-to-mid 90s by early next week.

El Niño is expected to develop in 2026.

"TAMPA, Fla. — In roughly one month, the 2026 hurricane season kicks off, and forecasters expect a slightly below-average season this year."

"Colorado State University's preliminary forecast predicts the season will bring 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes."

🔥 Fire Danger Statement in effect through 7 PM tonight — low humidity, SW gusts to 25 mph. Keep it off the grill.

A cold front arrives Wednesday, bringing scattered showers and the best rainfall of the event Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Richmond picks up around half an inch; southeast Virginia and NE North Carolina could see close to an inch.

Mariners: Small Craft Advisories expanded along the VA/NC coast and Currituck Sound.

The weekend looks warm and mostly dry.

Projected rainfall totals into Sunday

This evening, the forecast is holding steady: expect a dry Friday followed by a damp Saturday. While Southeast VA and Northeast NC will see the most rain (0.50" to 1.00"), Richmond and northern areas will likely only see light showers. Highs return to the 80s by Tuesday.
