New Gambling Laws Impact

I think the TV media aren’t discussing the impact the new gambling laws (go into place start of 2027) are going to have on them because it’s going to reduce their income drastically.

Main Rule: No gambling ads from 30 min before match to 30 min after match (includes qt and ht) for tv or radio broadcasts.

3 gambling ads per hour from 6am to 830 pm

No celebrity/athlete endorsement’s

No uniform or stadium advertisements

It was estimated that roughly 1/3 of channel 7 afl revenue comes from gambling ads. The current tv rights deal lasts until end of 2031 but I think the new deal would have to be smaller based on the new laws which is an issue for clubs and players like Pickett Walsh Serong who are contracted to 2034. I get the feeling all clubs just assumed the salary cap would continue to increase.

WC Freo GWS and Bl also all have direct sponsors that will be affected by the new rules.

I’m not against the new rules but it’s worth discussing the impact it will have, but we aren’t really getting that because the tv media doesn’t want to acknowledge their revenue reliance on gambling.
