Some nuance on the usual "OC Transpo bad"

Rant on bad infrastructure.

We have a crazy sprawl situation. Everything is far away from everything else, there's not enough mixed-use land. If you live in suburbia, then walking or biking to where you need to be is out of the question.

Can you imagine what it would be like if your commute to work was 5km instead of 15km? What if you didn't need a bus or a car, or only needed it for some of your trips, and for shorter distances?

OC Transpo is bad, yes. Cancelled trips and late buses abound. But I think we're getting mad at the wrong thing here - obviously a transit system isn't going to work very well if you need it to service a gigantic area where people are so spread out. Obviously it doesn't work if all the buses get caught in the same traffic caused by car-dependent infrastructure. Buses can't run as often so the ones that do show up are crowded, and now your commute is a bus and a train and it doesn't get you there any faster.

It's something the next generation might be able to enjoy and not us, but building density instead of propping up a stretched bus system seems like the better thing to focus on in the long run. Not saying it's okay that OC Transpo sucks as much as it does, but I don't think it's from just mismanagement alone.

Obligatory Sutcliffe sucks Ford sucks LRT sucks OC Transpo no Barefax yes
