Has anyone played with upcasting spells?

Magic missile - cast at tier 3, gives 2d4 darts, DC 13 spell check, use the tier 3-4 mishap table. Tier 5, 3d4 darts, DC 15, uses Tier 5 mishap table.

Compared to lightning bolt tier 3 -3d6 in a line or fireball 4d6 in near.

Tier 5 prismatic orb - 3d8.

Spells like sleep/hold person I'd say upcasting increases the level effected in a similar way (balanced against other spells at that tier that do similar things).

Hi!

I am Tom, DM looking to add a few players to our local game store game.

Where: In person at Gator Games local game store in Leavenworth, KS

When: 5:30 pm ish to 8:45 pm ish

What: DnD 5.5e, with a little Shadowdark home brewed in, party is trapped in the underdark along with part of the city of Silverymoon that has fallen in after a drow attack and massive magical earthquake.

-Currentlty level 4, (Monk, Fighter, Cleric, Tome Warlock)

All of us are in our 30s/40s, 4 guys, 1 gal.

Cost: Gators charges $7.50 a session/$30 a month per player for the space/accessories.

Looking for: 1-2 players, newcomers welcome, happy to entertain non-standard character build/classes ideas subject to DM review.
