How to manage players with different levels of Cosmere familiarity?

I'm going to be GMing a game for several of my friends in a couple months. 4 of the players are deep into the Cosmere and have read all the main Stormlight and Mistborn books. 1 player has never read anything Cosmere related.

Does anyone have experience running a game with players like this? Do I just give the inexperienced player the world guide and have them figure it out? I am also trying with them being from off-world somehow so that he has an in-character reason for not knowing much about Roshar.

Is this even worth trying to fix up?

This pond/water feature looks super cool in my yard. But it looks like the roots of the tree on the "island" busted up the concrete really bad and I have no idea where the pump is or where the water lines on it run. I think this thing would look awesome if I got it up and running but I don't know if it's feasible. I have a couple questions that I am trying to figure out:

  1. Is it even possible to get a rubber liner that could match the weird shape of this pond with the island and the stream?
  2. I have a red eared slider that I would like to move from a tank into a pond, but I don't want her escaping. So would it be possible to secure this pond with a fence without making it look bad?
  3. Will I be able to manage this without removing the tree on the island? It provides a ton of great shade for the yard. Will the pond hurt the tree?

If I can't make it work, I'll probably end up turning the circular part into a sandbox for the kids and tearing out the fountain and stream parts. I would also end up building a smaller pond for my turtle elsewhere, maybe with a big stock tank.
