When it became clear that German defeat in World War I was inevitable, Germany's Oberste Heeresleitung (Supreme Army Command) - which had spent much of the war governing Germany as a de facto military dictatorship, essentially reducing the Kaiser to a figurehead - handed power over to a civilian government which was forced to agree to the unpopular terms in the Treaty of Versailles, thereby setting the politicians who led that government as scapegoats for losing the war, thus setting up what became known as the dolchstoßlegende (stab-in-the-back myth). Tragically, this exercise in blame-shifting undermined the Weimar Republic's legitimacy and fueled right-wing extremism, thus contributing to the rise of the Nazis, World War II and the Holocaust.

forbes.comI think I might've determined one possible reason why we don't see more leftists saying Trump might've won illegitimately.
One question that I've seen come up a few times is why we don't see more leftists asking questions about the results of the 2024 election, which raise so many red flags they could pass for a Chinese military parade. And I think I identified a possible factor in some cases: it contradicts a belief many leftists have about the election; more specifically, that Kamala Harris lost because she didn't take a sufficiently leftist approach.
You see arguments like these time and again: "she didn't condemn the Israeli government hard enough", "she shouldn't have campaigned with Liz Cheney", "she threw immigrants and trans people under the bus", and so on. We can argue over how truthful statements like these are, but it would be hard for one to make these arguments and simultaneously insist that Harris was cheated. Simply put, there are a lot of people who believe (or want to believe) that Harris' loss is proof that embracing leftism is the best way forward for the Democratic Party, and saying that she actually won on the strategy she adopted would seriously undermine the idea that the Party can only go forward by going left. So they just don't bring that up as a potential scenario. This isn't to say that Harris didn't lose any votes by not moving further to the left, since that's a distinct possibility. But if we believe that the election was tampered with, and especially if we believe some of the votes were switched, it's hard to justify also believing that possible mistakes she made on the campaign trail were decisive factors. To be blunt, it's hard to call that anything other than doublethink.
Now, this obviously shouldn't be taken as a given for all leftists. Some of them are openly willing to acknowledge the possibility, and I'm sure there are leftist skeptics who doubt the idea for other reasons. But it's not hard to suspect that there are some who would be more willing to say Harris was cheated if she adopted stances closer to theirs rather than brushing her loss off as being due to leftist ideas lacking popularity in mainstream America.
