Some advice
I’ve seen a lot of posts about how to move up/ get a new position. Specifically, away from phones. I wanted to share some information that might help those this resonates with.
The reality is, right now even for those in off the phone positions, moving in general is really hard. The market is a super competitive one. Even if you have your BA or even MBA- you will still struggle if you do not have the experience the hiring manager is seeking. 8/10 times this will be through internal experience UNLESS you can really sell your STARs.
So, what do you do?
Well first, identify where specifically you want to go. Not just “any job” or “anywhere but here”. Research, figure out a couple of pathways that sound like what you would enjoy. Be honest with yourself- don’t just base it off of pay.
Then, network. Get a mentor in the role (yes phones you can do this). Email people with a request for a “get to know you and your role”. Go in office for a day or two- meet people there! Get people to know you, your brand, your face.
Then, if you’re not meeting the competencies for a job, work with your sup/ manager/ mentor to get the experience you need. Make yourself an asset- showcase your growth mindset.
If a job posts and you haven’t done all that, that’s okay too. Reach out to someone in the position to learn about it, talk to the recruiter. Don’t ask “will this get me off the phones”. Ask about the role, highlight things you’ve done that meet the competencies. Ask questions about career growth after that position etc.
And even if you do all that- it might still be a while until you get what you want. Why? The market is tough, and consistency matters. If you don’t have a degree, maybe think of pursuing one. Or taking lateral moves. Hope this all helps- from a burnt out high performer.
