While trade deficits are not inherently harmful, a sustained and widening deficit may signal deeper structural weaknesses in domestic production and competitiveness, Panao said in his latest analysis of the region’s trade data.

He said the Philippines’ expanding deficit contrasts sharply with trends elsewhere in the region. “The Philippines is not just firmly among the region’s largest deficit economies, it is at the bottom,” he said.

Indonesia reversed a $5 billion trade deficit in 2015 into a $2.9 billion surplus by 2024. A trade surplus means exports exceed imports, allowing a country to earn more from global trade than it spends.

Malaysia maintained strong surpluses throughout the decade, reaching $24.2 billion, while Thailand remained in positive territory near $20 billion.

Singapore recorded the region’s largest surplus at $58.6 billion, while Vietnam shifted dramatically over the same period, expanding its export-oriented manufacturing sector from a $5.6 billion deficit in 2015.
