2E - Random NPC Generator

I created a Random NPC generator for 2E.
This excel based NPC generator will create up to 6 fully flushed out single class NPCs up to Level 20.
Let me know if you find it useful or if you run into any errors.

This will likely require Excel 365 but it may work on other versions I did not test that.

I’ve been working on an Excel-based RPG Weather Generator for my tabletop campaign and wanted to share it with other DMs/GMs who might find it useful.

The workbook is built around a front-facing GM Dashboard where you can enter a Julian day and instantly get the weather for that date. It currently uses the Faerûn / Harptos calendar, but the results could be adapted for other fantasy settings.

It generates:

  • Day and night temperatures
  • Sky conditions
  • Rain, snow, fog, hail, lightning, and blizzards
  • Wind speed, direction, and description
  • Moon phase
  • Sunrise and sunset
  • Tide depth
  • Holidays and interested divine/faction parties

2E AD&D-style weather effects for travel, combat, flying, visibility, spellcasting, cold, heat, and precipitation. This should be fairly easy to convert to other rule sets.

There is also a full Year of Weather tab that creates a 365-day weather calendar, plus supporting tables for climate, precipitation, and wind.

The tool is still a work in progress, but it is already usable at the table. My main goal was to make weather feel like part of the world instead of something I forget to mention until the players ask.

I’d appreciate any feedback, especially from DMs who use weather, travel, wilderness exploration, or old-school AD&D-style procedures in their games.

I built an Excel workbook to randomly generate treasure for 2E.

The main tab is called Treasure Gen, and the other tabs (hidden) support it with tables for coins, gems, art objects, magic items, carried items, trade goods, furnishings, services, and other random treasure.

My goal is to make something useful at the table that can generate treasure on the fly that feels more interesting than just coins and magic items.

Here to share the tool, not debate about whether its necessary or not. If you like it then download and enjoy it, if not then politely move on.

Thanks.

First off - (Microsoft 365 required although I have not tested it on other platforms/versions)

The Link below is for a tool I built for my 2E - Forgotten Realms campaign to help adjudicate wilderness survival, climate, terrain, and Nonweapon Proficiency checks at the table.

The basic idea is simple: instead of treating Survival as one broad modern-style skill, the workbook treats it the more granular — as terrain-specific survival knowledge.

Examples:

  • Survival: Desert
  • Survival: Tundra
  • Survival: Mountains
  • Survival: Forest
  • Survival: Jungle
  • Survival: Swamp
  • Survival: Marine
  • Survival: Underground
  • Survival: Ruins
  • Survival: Road / Trade Route
  • Survival: Sylvan

The workbook is built around a GM Selector sheet, all other tabs are hidden and locked. (NO PASSWORD) . Unlock to edit as you see fit for your game.

The GM chooses:

  • A Nonweapon Proficiency
  • A terrain type
  • The character’s Survival or related skill
  • A task type

Then the sheet returns guidance such as:

  • The relevant skill
  • Slots
  • Ability modifier
  • Source
  • Why the proficiency matters
  • Related biomes and terrains
  • Related proficiencies
  • Suggested terrain-use modifier
  • Survival relationship, such as Exact, Closely Related, Related, Poor Match, or DM Call
  • Task-specific guidance

The Terrain framework for the campaign consists of Biomes and sub divisions of those Biomes. Should be self explanatory and there is a reference table in the lower left corner:

Desert: Tundra, Badlands, Sand Sea, Glacier / Icefield
Grassland: Steppe, Plains, Savanna
Highlands: Mountains, Hills
Forest: Boreal, Forest, Jungle
Various: City, Road / Trade Route, Ruins, Sylvan
Subterranean: Underdark, Dungeon, Caverns
Aquatic: Swamp, Marsh / Bog / Fen, Fresh Water, River / Lake, Coastal, Marine

The workbook includes task types such as:

  • Predict Weather
  • Find Food
  • Find Water
  • Find Shelter
  • Find Safe Camp
  • Avoid Getting Lost
  • Navigate Route
  • Track Creature
  • Identify Animal Signs
  • Identify Plants / Herbs
  • Identify Natural Hazard
  • Build Fire
  • Cross Difficult Terrain
  • Travel Endurance
  • Hide / Blend with Terrain
  • Mark or Read Trail
  • Use Small Craft
  • Handle Mount / Pack Animal
  • Assess Ruins / Structures
  • Explore Caves / Underground
  • Survive Extreme Weather

So, for example, if the party is in the Mountains trying to Find Food, and a character has Survival: Forest, the sheet can show that the terrain match is poor, suggest a modifier, and still recommend more appropriate proficiencies like Foraging, Hunting, Animal Lore, or Survival: Mountains.

It is not meant to replace DM judgment. It is more of a structured ruling assistant for 2E wilderness travel, weather, terrain, and survival scenes.

The goal is to make wilderness proficiency checks feel more grounded without slowing the game down, especially in a Forgotten Realms campaign where terrain can shift from roads and farms to mountains, ruins, swamps, deserts, Underdark passages, or enchanted sylvan places.

I’m curious to know if anyone finds this a useful tool. I am also working on a fairly in depth weather generator that utilized much of the same logic. I will post this up in a few days if people are interested.

I really wanted to get back to sharing GM tools again, no payware no paetron, or other bs, just a guy wanting to share some cool tools. This is the first of several I want to build out.
