How do you guys wind your automatic watch?

do you guys wind your watch by shaking it or hand winding it

whats the benefit and disadvantage of both

i personally handwind it because i have enough time to hand wind the watch everyday…what about you guys….and the guys who hand wind your watch how many rotations you try to do

Controversial take on quartz watches

seeing many people talk about automatic movement vs quartz movement i feel that we often don’t distinguish automatics and quartz watches

this post is more about luxury watches above 80k

quartz watches don’t last longer than good Condition automatics:

even a well taken care quartz watch will not Match the life of an automatic

  1. an automatic watch is fully mechanical and all it’s parts can be replaced and with proper maintenance the need for replacement is also not much and the overall movement itself being needed to be replaced is a Much rarer occurance for a decades old automatic than it is to a quartz.
  2. meanwhile a quartz watch isn’t the same because it has electronic components like the circuits and modules which can fail and if they do so it’s much much difficult to replace the components than to replace the quartz movement itself. (this is mainly about luxury quartz ranging at 80k above)

meant To be worn:

i also feel if you are gonna not wear a watch much and only for occasions i feel automatics are a much better choice as:

  1. In some quartz watches i dont wear often i have noticed after the battery depletes there is a high chance of a battery leak if not replaced.

quartz crisis:

we watch enthusiasts do know about the quartz crisis (basically quartz watches causing losses to the Swiss watches) ….. and the story goes swatch helped to revive the quartz industry through their “fun” watches.

i want to stress this fun watches part because that’s what my whole opinion on quartz watches revolve around

  1. are we over stressing quality: i feel a quartz watch should be enjoyed …i feel a compromise of build quality in exchange of better visual quality is fine.
  2. I think we should appreciate watch brands which not only make good looking but more fun more unique design.
  3. Manufacturers should focus on battery life … like as i had discussed like a quartz watch life isn’t that much .. Casio offers 10 year battery life so if we replace bettered with really good quality ones we only have to replace battery 2-5 times in a watch life .
  4. Let’s be honest most of us don’t keep a quartz watch that long so why not start modding our old watches.

My big questions:

my first question is whether is it even worth to get a quartz watch over 50k …in that range we can comfortably get a automatic is a quartz worth that much.

my second question is how much is the max you would pay for an quartz watch maximum

Final thoughts:

i would like to say this post does not talk about solar watches because they last longer than regular quartz but not like automatics because again electronic components

grand seiko are a marvel of engineering and this post doesn’t talk about it

digital watches have seemingly the last the least due to easy display fading and other stuff

but i will stand firm on the fact that quartz watches are real watches too

all this is my personal thoughts people can do whatever they want but i would like to know your opinions on this

A Reality check about seiko 5

many people when going sub 30k go to this watch directly but people should realise there are better options

specs:

  1. This watch has hardlex which is a mineral crystal like come on seiko yeah they preserve clarity but still they should try to give sapphire crystal at this price point.

  2. 100m water resistance is fine but the issue is this watch predecessor the legendary seiko skx had 200 meters water resistance.

  3. the 4r36 is a good movement but that being said now in 2026 there is tough competition to this movement.

  4. This watch does not have the screw down crown which it’s predecessor the skx

  5. that being said the lume of this watch is unreal good.

quality: this is something I didn’t want to talk much about because seiko is seiko and it’s finishing is really good that being said ….. the bracelet is not good.

iso certification: this is something i wanted to talk about a bit because the skx had this and was classified under divers watch category …really disappointing seiko assuming we watch enthusiasts dont value this much

pricing:

this is where the major issues begins like seiko hiking the price it was sold much much cheaper 20 years ago and even 3 or 2 years go the 5kx price was hiked by 3k from 24k to 27k

I am not a fan of this price hiking … atleast give the watch a refresh Add any new feature like this is ridiculous

final thoughts:

this is a good watch but not the only watch like we have options how if you are looking for watches in this price range look more widely seiko is no longer the vfm watch king

Everything You Need To Know About An Automatic Watch

In my last post many people were asking doubts about maintenance and questions about ownership of automatic watches so here we go

what is an automatic watch:

watches which convert kinetic energy into energy for the watch to run are called mechanical watches…automatic watches are a type of mechanical watch Which uses the energy from the motion of your wrists to power the watch.

Maintenance:

  1. In an automatic watch the time should be set at safe zone [safe zone is the 6o clock position] before changing the date …this is to prevent damage to the date mechanism.

  2. Check the guidelines from the manufacturer of your watch for service timeline ….. in reality many watches can go without service for many years even decades …typically a 5 year service is more than enough.

  3. A automatic watch doesn’t like abrupt movements so avoid wearing it during intense sports.

  4. Store the watch in a clean place and use a micro fiber cloth to wipe the watch.

  5. Wind the watch if it has hand winding before use but it can turn on shortly while you wear itself.

  6. Avoid bringing the automatic watch close to magnetic fields.

Daily use measures:

  1. if you are handwinding the watch, setting time or date always remove the watch while doing this.

  2. While setting dare follow the safe zone rule i already told about.

  3. if your watch is from a major brand it most probably has a slipping bridle which will prevent damage from overwinding.

  4. Typically 20-30 rotations are more than enough while hand winding.

  5. Ensure you use the watch within the specified water resistance limit.

Common questions:

  1. It is common for an automatic watch to be slightly inaccurate.

  2. Storing a automatic watch for long period will not do it any damage if it’s stored in clean and safe place.

  3. A winding machine will increase wear and tear on the watch movement not Dramatically but a bit.

  4. Most of the parts on the watch can be replaced by brand if broken and even third party skilled service centres but don’t give your watch to random mechanics.

Final thoughts:

an automatic watch needs to be taken care but it’s not too fragile …try to follow the measures i told

Hope this helped you in your watch journey!

Let’s end this QUARTZ VS AUTOMATIC debate

quartz vs automatic is nowadays becoming a trending topic …like some people call quartz watches not real watches and i have seen this i wanted to share my thoughts on this:

mechaquartz is not a automatic:

  1. people claiming mechaquartz to be superior to quartz due to the smoother sweep shoils realise one thing …. Quartz is still quartz.
  2. Mechaquartz are more expensive than quartz movements.
  3. People ask why does Casio and timex watches Still give regular quartz here is a simple answer …these companies spent a lot of resources on developing their movement and they have been doing for years ensuring it meets not only their cost margins but also we should realise that some watches have some features like 10 years battery life and stuff if a brand like Casio wants to switch to mechaquartz they have to redevelop their own new mechaquartz not buy some other mechaquartz just to meet some features like 10 years Battery life.
  4. Mechaquartz on it’s own can’t be compared to a automatic because the whole point of a automatic is to run on energy generated without a battery.

Budget:

  1. If you try to get a automatic and quartz watch at the same price of course the quartz will be better quality most of the time.
  2. Cheating out on a automatic is the worst thing you can do because a automatic watch is a art and if the frame of the art isn’t suiting the art the art will look worse.

Reliability:

  1. guys chill a automatic watch is not made of paper … if you get a good reliable watch like seiko you can go years without servicing …i have seen people rock 20 year old seiko without servicing.
  2. That being said reliability wise a good quality quartz is gonna be more reliable from just the fact that it has less parts.
  3. still a automatic watch will last longer.(if taken good care)

Personality:

NOTE: this is a personal opinion

  1. in my opinion a automatic watch has much more character than a quartz watch.
  2. A automatic feels more of part of you than being something you wear .
  3. Automatic lasts longer than quartz and can go generations that Watch Will live along with you .(if taken good care)

Practicality:

  1. many automatics In 60k above price bracket usually has a power reserve nearly 70 hours ….which means you can remove the watch in Friday evening and wear it in monday morning with ease.
  2. People really make this a big deal but for me it just takes two minutes sometimes even less …so I don’t mind it.
  3. Sure if you are in a rush yeah quartz will be quicker to pick and go.
  4. Mind the fact the quartz is a more accurate movement Too.
  5. But let’s be Real most of the time we ourselves set the time 30-60 second’s inaccurate the automatic will become inaccurate similar amount of time in 3-4 days but in my experience i have seen a deviation of around just 6-7 seconds max in my watch.
  6. Battery anxiety is something some people including me have …. It might sound ridiculous but i dont want my watch to just stop when i am wearing it and am present somewhere.

use case:

  1. A g shock cant have an automatic for obvious reasons…. Quartz can be More rugged .
  2. So if you are a person who wants to wear a watch while doing sports and stuff quartz is definitely the better pick.

Advice to beginners:

  1. If you have never worn a watch but going to wear one now …i will suggest you to start with quartz to see if you like wearing a watch first.
  2. To people who worn some watches and now want to get their first serious watch…. If an automatic is coming in your budget go for it ….if it doesn’t then go for quartz.
  3. People shifting from quartz to automatic…i will suggest getting a cheaper automatic like the seiko 5 and then decide if you like it it first then proceed to more expensive stuff.

These both movements can’t be compared :

  1. One is a practical tool … other is a art but can have purposes.
  2. when the ownership experience of both these are soo different how can it be compared.

final thought:

buy what you like, but also buy with the understanding why you like it

Don’t fall into Kala watch co hype

got to see this watch in person ….being a Indian micro brand of course this is in demand watch with high hype…so i have a few thoughts on this watch

build quality:

  1. It’s a very average build quality ….neither bad nor good just average.

  2. The case polishing has issues at some places…however i have noticed this inconsistencies seem to be in some hidden region so they could have some qc checks in place avoiding visible polishing issues.

  3. Tighter qc will he appreciated but for The price as long as visible inconsistency are avoided then it’s alright.

Dial:

1.this is my favourite dial by any Indian micro brand.

2.its layered well, looks unique , in my view looks good, haven’t noticed any inconsistency with the dial which is good .

  1. My only very minor complaint …by minor i mean really small complaint would be the lume some colour variants don’t have it so people buying should be aware of it….i really hope they add a disclamer.

Watch movement:

  1. The vk64 is a reliable movement and for the price it’s a pretty good deal.

  2. However the vk64 is famous for is alignment issues….i really wish micro-brands add a disclaimer about this to avoid frustrated customers.

watch presentation:

1.the way the watch is presented in the box with all the other stuff is a near 10/10 from me.

  1. It’s done thoughtfully and presented brilliantly.

  2. It’s a major bonus in terms of the watch ownership experience.

Major issues in The watch in my opinion:

1.the lugs of the watch are too long ….it affects the wearability of this watch.

2.there seem to be a bit of gap between strap and the case due to the lug it’s a really frustrating issue ..cause otherwise looks wise the watch Is presented near flawlessly except the polishing inconsistenclies.

3.i am not a big fan of the straps of Kala watch co …I hope they improve the quality

lacklustre specs:

1.compared to other micro brands this watch has more lacklustre specs.

2.mineral dome crystal and 50 meter water resistance is below average considering competition from other microbrands.

  1. kala Watch co might have invested more into the dial causing this lacklustre specs but looking at the price point at least increasing the price to add a sapphire crystal would have appreciated cause that’s a better way to preserve the dial appearance over a long period of time.

Dont fall into hype:

1.This watch wont fit on every wrist …the lug to lug on this watch is massive for many people this watch will be too big..don’t buy this from pure hype buy this with considering ever factor .

  1. This is end of the day a watch …. Kala watch co might launch better watches in future there is no point in buying a watch just because it’s trending at the moment l.

sale method:

this is my biggest issue with Indian micro brands

  1. Stop this restock and sale batches method it’s totally not fair.

  2. a brand must make a certain number of watches not more and not less and let customers preorder the watches and if the number of watches is over then stop.

  3. Don’t make customers waiting months to get a watch and then be disappointed When they can’t get it.

  4. The dwc terra recent restock has clearly showed us this restock small batches and sell method has multiple issues.

Don’t buy from scalpers:

  1. This is not a limited edition Rolex…… this is a cheap watch from an Indian micro brand …it is not worth to pay an extra on this or any watch.

  2. These scalpers are ruining the watch collection hobby.

Final thought:

this watch is worth the price but not worth it when people buy it for hype not because they actually like it

Buy if you like, don’t buy because others like

u/New_Significance414 — 5 days ago

i already know i am gonna be downvoted but here we go …..in my opinion after seeing all the dwc watches either from friends or owning i cant believe how overhyped they are,….here are few of my thoughts

quality :

  1. The finishing is subpar the polishing is on level of other Indian microbrands.

3.dial look underwhelming irl ….addesdive makes much much more appealing dials.

4.found a lot of deal breaking issues in the movement which is surprising because mostly their miyota and seiko movements.

5.their vk61 in vayu bison is terrible 2 out 3 watches i had seen had issues.

  1. their vk63 has alignment issues ….addesdive and Kala watch co also reportedly have alignment issues with vk63 Heard from friends but all of them agree that addesdive is the one who has least issues with the vk63

  2. one of my friend vayu 3 has irregular polishing in the inner part of lugs….other brands would have been bashed if this happened.

  3. the crystal which dwc used on many of their models seems really bad due to it’s ar coating especially been finding that a major issue in the new vayu bison where they claimed they used ar coating.

pricing is not really suprising:

  1. addesdive, watches dive, steel dive make much more vfm watches than dwc only due to import charges we face issues.
  2. even after the import charges addesdive watches in Indian warehouse is similarly priced so are we really telling dwc is unbelievably good.

3.lets Take the echostar of example it a cheap gmt but if you are wondering watchesdive too released a gmt for 8k last year with discounts going down to 7k and the echostar is 11k.

  1. also first time buyers should know you will get what you pay for is the movement impressive then there will be a compromise in case finishing ….is both are good then check out the crystal …. let’s be honest a no compromise watch in this price range is impossible.

reality of dwc:

they source most of their components they are not made in India …they itself say they are assembled in India not fully made

  1. everyone should be careful buying watches from microbrands as nowadays fake Chinese copied nh movements are in rotation.
  2. dwc is selling watches mostly based on hype and FOMO(fear of missing out) this is why their limited restocking go soo well.

stories which don’t make sense:

  1. being a motorsport enthusiast and watch enthusiast find their triple crown dials very bad… the graham Hill colour says it was inspired by his helmet …graham hill never had full stripes or red colour on his helmet.
  2. Similarly echo star they claim to have some Indian touches …for real they could never do that simply because the movement is a seiko movement.
  3. the havelock had rotor noises which is a really frustrating.

Better options available:

  1. A Casio edifice at this budget provides much better finishing ….even the new Casio regular range with stainless steel case is a league above finishing of not only dwc but any microband.
  2. A timex in this range has better legacy and is a more iconic for someone seeking that.
  3. Addesdive in general make better watches than dwc And addesdive having a Indian warehouse makes them more vfm than dwc.

conclusion:

a Indian microband will Have its limitations i see many new enthusiasts caught in this hype train and then be disappointed.

i am not saying to dismiss and ignore dwc watches …i am saying one must know what they are getting before buying and not flow in hype train.

not following hype train suggestion is for not only dwc but all watch brands …. Buy what you actually like and want even if it has inferior specs it will satisfy you more .

i know this is a controversial take i will get downvoted but this is more of a rant after getting together with some watch buddies and many of them frustrated .

my final thought :- buy what speaks to you not something which you buy because it’s been talked about a lot

timex marlin is based on 1970s timex and the weekender of course released is 2010 …..as a watch enthusiast i am getting a question in my mind …. we see the weekender getting recommended world wide for what it is and has been one of timex most popular models …. so i ask is the weekender a modern icon….will we after 20-30 years look back and regard the weekender as a more iconic watch than the marlin or the legendary marlin legacy still stand firm in the top of the crown… tell your thoughts on this
