Quick warning based on my recent service experience, don’t assume the dealership is using the correct oil.
The manual and oil cap both specify 0W-30, but I found out after my visit that 5W-30 was used instead - even though I clearly told the advisor to stick to the recommended spec.
I get that people argue the differences between 0W-30 and 5W-30 aren’t huge, but that’s not really the point. If there’s ever an engine issue and you need to rely on warranty, Hyundai will look at what’s written in the manual, not what the dealer decided was “close enough” or what is more fuel efficient.
I reached out to the dealership asking:
- Why the wrong oil was used
- Whether they’d stand behind it if there were future engine issues
They responded pretty quickly and asked me to bring the vehicle back in. They mentioned it might have been documented incorrectly, but said they’d redo the oil change anyway just to be safe.
Appreciate them fixing it, but this shouldn’t happen in the first place, especially when instructions were clearly given.
Lesson learned:
• Always check your service invoice
• Don’t assume specs are followed
