Double Jaw Surgery: Did Your Bite Feel “Wrong” at First but Eventually Settle Correctly?

Hey everyone, I’m currently 6 days post-op from double jaw surgery for a Class III malocclusion and I wanted to ask about your experiences with occlusion during the first weeks after surgery.

Right now my bite is definitely much better than before surgery, but it still doesn’t feel “perfectly locked in.” I still have elastics pulling my lower jaw forward and there’s a small gap between some teeth where my tongue can still slightly pass through. Sometimes I also feel little shifts/clicks/tension changes when swallowing or relaxing my jaw.

My surgeon says the elastics are still guiding the bite and that things settle over time, but mentally it’s hard not to overanalyze every tiny movement and wonder if the occlusion is wrong.

For people who already went through this:

- Were your teeth perfectly aligned immediately after surgery?

- Did your bite continue changing during the first weeks with elastics?

- Did you ever feel like the occlusion was “off” early on and then it eventually settled correctly?

- Could you still feel spaces/open bite tendencies during the first days or weeks?

Would really appreciate hearing real experiences because I think I’m checking my bite way too much at the moment 😅

32 h in, still numb on the temple, on the chin everything gets better. (Red part)

Numb on the lips and part of the right face.

It was a rough night, the rubber band hurt a lot and I had to take medicines for the pain.
The swallow pain seems a little bit reduced.

Exactly 22 hours post-op. The situation is not the best, but overall it’s okay.

The red area is numb, extending a little toward the right temple as well.

They’re supposed to discharge me from the clinic tomorrow, but honestly I’m not sure how I feel about it. I don’t feel great about leaving the clinic yet.

Yesterday after surgery I managed to eat some ice cream, but today almost nothing because swallowing hurts too much.

I have small rubber bands inside my mouth and I’ll need to keep them for 4 days.

Every time I swallow it feels like my mouth is exploding, but I was told it’s normal because of the new jaw position.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a little better 🤞🏼🤞🏼
