I own a '17 Nissan Rogue. It has 170k miles on it and the battery & check engine light are on. I would have to replace the catalytic converter, alternator, & ECM. I can't afford 4k in repairs. I owe 20k on the car.

The car still drives fine but mechanics don't know how long it'll last.

I was thinking of trading it in but I read on here it's not a good idea to trade in a car with negative equity. The most I can come up with is around $1000 for a down payment unless trading in the car as the down payment suffices.

I know of a mobile mechanic who can repair my alternator for cheap ($400) but I hadn't talk to him about the ECM.

1 mechanic told me I could get a refurbished ECM to save on money but I imagine those won't last long.

What should I do?
