Introduction: The Empire of New Libertalia
Hi micronationalists! New Libertalia here. We have been founded in 2021 but largely went quiet after a death in the family. We have recently picked things back up and wanted to properly introduce ourselves before becoming more active here.
The Empire of New Libertalia is a micronation based on a 5000 m² plot of land in the Netherlands, with plans to eventually expand into another EU country onto many acres of land: likely somewhere in Scandinavia or Spain, though nothing is confirmed yet. We currently have 3 citizens.
New Libertalia was founded out of growing discontent with the direction of modern society. There is a lot of talk about diversity and multiculturalism, but very little of it translates into the actual freedom that makes real diversity possible: the right of communities to govern themselves, live by their own values, and be genuinely different (the right of self determination, a human right). What we see instead is a slow flattening of everything into the same grey centralized middle ground. If you are a minority or your way of life does not fit the mainstream mold, you are often on your own. We wanted to build something that takes that seriously. Essentially we plan to build a bare framework for communities of all kind to easily cooperate with each other without dictating what those communities should internally look like.
Our name comes from the legendary pirate colony of Libertalia, said to have been founded in late 17th century Madagascar under Captain James Misson. The name itself derives from the Latin liberi: free. Misson's vision was a society where people of all colours, creeds and beliefs lived free from scrutiny. Whether the colony was real or myth, the idea was worth continuing.
We are an absolute monarchy. Democracy sounds appealing until you realise it is essentially two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner, and on a micronational scale that problem is even bigger. The monarchy is not necessarily our end destination, but right now it is the structure best suited to protecting our values from being voted away by a majority. We plan to experiment with forms of democracy & citizens participations, though.
Our goals are practical: become as self-sufficient as possible, encourage our citizens to be self-sufficient, build real relationships and support within our surrounding local communities, and demonstrate that the gaps left by macrogovernments can actually be filled and done better. We want to show by example, not just argue. Longer term we push for recognition of our right to self-determination: whether that means some form of autonomy or full independence. The latter is more dream than plan, but we keep it on the horizon.
We are still in the early building stages and will not be jumping into diplomacy or formal relations just yet. But I wanted to be present in this community and felt introducing ourselves properly was the right place to start. Happy to answer any questions.
