Advice/WWYD

Was nearly assaulted by one of my students today in PE. I was just wondering how other subs would handle this situation. If a child had lost their temper and was in your face almost nose to nose, spitting and finger pointing and bawling his fist up threatening to beat you up if you didn’t leave the gym. How would you handle the situation? And pretend you had walked backward about 10 feet trying to get the student out of your face but he was still persistent. Oh and also pretend this is a school where if you hit the office call button it’ll take 5 minutes for a response. WWYD?

If I’m being a jerk or unrealistic let me know and I’ll do my best to change my attitude. I’m at a school today for PE that I’ve only been to maybe once or twice in the last few years PE is by far my favorite subject to sub and I also think it’s the easiest crazy enough I walk into the school today and before I can make it to the gym three of the administrators were laughing and giggling, saying boy you dodged a bullet we almost had to pull you and put you in a kindergarten room today and we still might! Ummmm? Hell no?? 🤣🤣🤣 I did not sign up for a kindergarten class two weeks before the end of school on a Friday, kids that I’ve never met or seen before by the way. Yeah ladies me and you both are glad that didn’t happen because I would’ve walked out of here and went home respectfully.

I love subbing and I’m excited to graduate and have a classroom of my own in about another year, but I’m getting tired of these psycho ass kids 🤣😭 it’s just getting so draining because of how constant the problems are and how widespread. Used to be when I was growing up, you’d only have two to five psycho kids per grade level. Now you have two to five psycho kids per classroom if you’re lucky, some classrooms have 5+. And not that old I’m only 26 so a lot has changed fast🤣 not to mention only a handful of schools in the city would be considered “rough “ fifteen years ago. Now, 75% of them are. Is this happening everywhere? I didn’t think I lived in a state that was infamously known for being violent, but maybe I’m just in a really rough city. Seriously, I’m in a city of about 200,000 people and 75% of the schools here are just so rough and violent it’s almost impossible to sub for them. I can pretty much expect a fist fight every single time I sub for a class in PE, which is what I do basically full-time, sub PE. Every single time I sub PE now, and it really doesn’t matter what school or what grade level I’m at, I can expect a bloody and gruesome fight, someone to elope, or someone to do something extremely dangerous. Seriously, I’ve seen things so wild you wouldn’t even believe them if you saw it in a TV show. Now I know what you’re thinking. Oh this dude must just be an awful substitute and he doesn’t even realize it, my kids don’t act that bad for me. I’ve been doing this for years and I care so much 😭 I go over expectations before every class starts and I list clear and stern punishments for those who don’t listen. I’ll be honest I’m a very strict and straight to the point sub, but doesn’t matter. These kids will try anybody they put in that class as a teacher. Just not sure how much longer I can keep this up. today I had to pull second graders off of each other because one was strangling the other with a hula hoop. To the point the kid nearly went fully unconscious. And this type of behavior is what I experienced the full eight hours, just wild.

So the city I work in is big enough that I’m almost able to sub PE full time. Maybe a day or two a week is an actual classroom. Been doing this for a couple years now. Any one else noticed that the more structure you put on the kids in PE the worse the behavior issues are. My easiest days subbing PE are when I just toss a couple basketballs and volleyballs out and tell everyone to keep their hands to themself or they sit. Works 99% of the time. But MAN whenever I’m subbing PE and the teacher actually wants me to run a dodgeball or tag unit it’s always a complete disaster, constant fighting physical and verbal and arguing. The school I’m at today, I’ve been to before and I’m having severe behavior issues because I’m trying to teach the kids how to play softball and they’re just not getting it and fights are starting 🤣 when last time I just tossed a couple balls out and the kids were completely fine all day. Think the teacher would be mad if I just scrapped her plans and just let the kids play? Or is that just gonna piss the teacher off
