l've been tattooing for about 2 years now, so still fairly junior. I do enjoy working at this shop and the atmosphere is good. I'm grateful for the mentors I have here, they've helped me a lot.
My only issue is it's a street shop, open 10-5, and I'm expected to be in every day even if I've got no bookings, just hoping for a walk-in. Some days nothing comes in, so I'm sat there doing nothing all day.
They also don't want me working in any other shops, so it's not like I can split my time elsewhere or pick up work between places. It doesn't really feel self-employed at all.
There's another artist there who's been there 10-15 years and they can pretty much leave whenever they want. The split is 60/40, so it's not chair rent.
Some days I just feel stuck, like I could be using my time better instead of sitting there waiting around.
Has anyone been in a similar position? Should I start looking at other studios, or is it still early days and better to stay where I am and keep learning the trade?
Any advice appreciated.
