Hi everyone!

I am a current law student and I have a interview next week for a trainee solicitor position with a commercial law firm. There is a 30 minute interview and a 30 minute written task. I have never worked or had an interview in the legal sector before, so I am slightly terrified and do not want to mess up my chance of securing a job. I was hoping to get some advice on the following questions.

  1. I have been told its best to show personality, but how do you do this? I am assuming if they ask the tell me about yourself question, this is where I can show my interests and personality, but are they expecting me to bring personality into all the questions they ask?

  2. What are the best questions to ask them at the end? I have though of, what do you enjoy most about working here, and what the next steps in the application process are - is this okay?

  3. I have been told who the interview is with, I am aware of the department the solicitor works in and what types of things they work on, but how much research are they going to be expecting me to have done, and how do I show that I have done my research?

  4. Is it okay to take notes into the interview? I am not going to read from them, but I am just thinking as a safety net incase I stumble

  5. How many examples of experiences, situations and tasks shall I have in mind that I can adapt to whatever questions are asked?

  6. For the written task, what tasks can I expect and how can I plan and prepare for it? I am going to practice drafting memos and letters and try to memorise the structure - is this enough?

  7. Finally is there anything else you suggest I shall prepare for and any other interview tips would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!
