Hi! I’ve recently got into a sticky financial situation and am thinking of applying for food stamps to help relieve some of the burden (if I qualify). I have been employed at Walmart for 5 years and make $14.58/hr. I’m in college and am doing clinicals this summer so I’ve took an educational leave, the clinicals are 5 days a week (unpaid externship). Me and my Fiancé live with his mother who we help. She has health issues and can’t do much around her house. She receives a SSI check and her late husband’s retirement. She draws pretty good money every month, pays the electric and internet (we have mountain water so no water bill and no garbage bill because we take our can to her sisters on garbage day.) my fiance makes good income too, around $1,200 biweekly. The sticky situation we are in is we all come to the agreement it would be best if I took the leave for clinicals, she agreed to help us if need be. We pay our own bills like car payment, insurance, phone, etc. we also buy our own groceries and a majority of the dinner supplies we would buy would be to feed her too as I do the cooking, I also do a majority of the cleaning and we buy those supplies as well, plus our personal hygiene items. We try to be as independent as we can. She decided to go visit her daughter out of state and has now been thinking of living with her but hasn’t said for certain. She was supposed to be home by now but doesn’t know when she will be coming back. This puts us in the situation of not having enough money to afford the things we usually can because of worrying about paying other bills we’ve not had to pay before. She has not “formally” moved so all of her income would be still be ky, my fiance makes around $47,000 annually and I do have a good job, I’m just not working right now. I’m stressing and I hope this post makes sense. Please no judgement I just want to gather information on food stamps to see if I would even qualify and whose income I would have to report. At the end of the day we will do what we have to do to be okay but if I can qualify and even get a small amount to make it through till I get back to work I would be so grateful. Sorry for the long post!
