Do I have grounds to report this gynaecologist?
I live in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
I waited about a year to get an appointment with one of the few gynaecologists we have in the city. My doctor suspected I had endometriosis, and the pain was getting worse, so I was really looking forward to this appointment. I ended up seeing a gynaecologist I’d seen four years prior. My first visit was quick, and after hearing that I had pain in my pelvic area, she suggested birth control. I’ve already been on birth control twice and had very traumatizing experiences on the pill, so I communicated that. She ended up just giving me tips to manage the pain and sent me for an ultrasound.
Four years later, I went in with even more extreme pain, but the symptoms were very similar to my first visit. The first thing she said when she saw me was that she remembered me and that I was the one who had rejected the birth control she offered. I thought that was strange, but I explained the symptoms I’d been having. The first thing she suggested was birth control. I told her that I didn’t want to go on birth control but that I was open to any other suggestions. She disclosed that she works at a birth control clinic and that she could get it for me at a discounted rate. I said no. She then offered an IUD. I told her once again that I wasn’t comfortable going on birth control or having an IUD. I asked to see a specialist so I could get formally diagnosed with endometriosis. She told me that she was diagnosing me right there and then with endometriosis and that I didn’t need to see a specialist. I asked her about excision surgery and whether that would help me. She told me that she would not refer me for surgery until I went on birth control (and it didn’t work) and then had an IUD inserted, and that if that didn’t work, I could be referred to a specialist for surgery.
I was really upset and felt like I wasn’t being listened to. I asked if she had anything else for me apart from birth control, and she gave me a prescription for birth control and said that her job was just to help me mitigate the pain.
Do I have grounds to report her? Is this considered adequate care? I waited 13 months for that appointment, only to be dismissed and pressured to go on birth control. I know she works at a birth control clinic, but how is this not a conflict of interest?
