Why do home printers suck at staying connected to wifi?

I'm 45 years old and I'm yet to own a printer that works 100% of the time. It sits on my counter and is only asked to do something once a week - and I typically end of with some kind of error or it just completely ignores me all together. Why does my refrigerator have a better wifi signal and connection strength than my printer sitting 14 feet from my router?
