The Iron Clinic UK - experiences?

I’m spoken to ‘The Iron Clinic’ via email and they think I’m a good candidate for an iron infusion (Ferritin is 17).

Has anyone here gone to The Iron Clinic (Leeds or London) for an infusion, if so what was your experience please? :)

My doctors won’t refer me and it’s quite spenny so just want to see if it’s worth it. I feel dreadful currently 🥲

Doctor refuses infusion referral

Hey, I’m (34f) in the UK and I posted in here a few days ago saying about my ferritin being at 17, and I have many awful dehabilitating symptoms that align with iron deficiency and I’m currently off work sick since last week because I feel too unwell to work. I also already take prescription iron and have done for yeaaars (322mg ferrous fumarate). I got loads of great information and advice from you guys so I went back to my doctors today to request help looking into the cause of my heavy periods and a referral to a haematologist to see if I can get an iron infusion.

Well, I saw a man and he was absolutely awful. He refused my referral for an iron infusion saying I didn’t meet the criteria as 17 ferritin isn’t that low. He told me just to go on the pill. I explained that I’ve been on the pill before and it made my periods worse. I told him about how I’ve been unwell for years and particularly unwell since my last period. I said if my ferritin is 17 normal and healthy according to him, then what is wrong with me? Why am I so fatigued, dizzy and my heart is constantly palptitating. Why do I have brain fog and hair loss, why do I feel like I’m constantly hungover. He then said those are symptoms of low iron so my symptoms are probably that, which aligns with my low ferritin test results. So I said ok then maybe I need an iron infusion, that could help my symptoms and he once again refused. So I asked him what am I supposed to do, and he said go on the pill.

Has anyone else in the UK experienced reactions like this? I left that appointment and just broke down, I’m at such a loss of battling my poor health for years. I think I may try and go private but I will struggle to afford it, but at this point I’m just so desperate. Thanks for listening x

Long Covid or iron deficiency?

Hey, bit of a long story but I’ll try make it quickish. I’m in the UK, 34, got suspected covid in July 2020 and potentially long covid since.
Symptoms began with a migraine and being sick, then severely disoriented, dizzy, heart racing/palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, visual disturbances, you know the classics.
I spent 2 years bedridden, then slowly started to get better, went back to work, did a MA (all still suffering with long covid and having crashes but still managing best I could). I still have exercise intolerance and have to pace.
But the last 6 weeks or so I have suddenly been deteriorating and I’m not sure why. All the symptoms above are back, plus hair loss, brittle nails, hot and cold flashes, shakes, restless legs.
I’ve been to the doctors and in classic them style, they don’t seem to care. I had a blood test that said all my levels were normal except I have pretty low iron (ferritin 17), even though I already take prescription iron pills. Come to think of it I have had consistently low iron for years, and when I first got sick with ‘Covid’ (no tests at the time) A&E sent me home with low iron and anxiety (lol). I do have severely heavy periods which doctors also refuse to look into, just offering me contraceptive pills which make me worse so I refuse them. I was actually on my period when I first got sick in that July 2020.
I’m wondering if anyone has had iron deficiency and long covid, or perhaps even my iron deficiency is presenting like an auto immune condition?! I’m starting to wonder if I have just suffered with such low iron for years, maybe that’s been my issue all along? Or it’s making my long covid/ chronic fatigue worse? Any advice would be great 🙂 thank you 🙏🏼

Hi, I’m 34, have heavy periods and have had low iron for yeaaaars, at one point I was at 3.
I have had fatigue issues for several years too, at one point I was bedridden but I never really got a proper diagnosis, perhaps long covid/cfs.
I’ve been managing to work again the last 3 years and even though I’m not able to exercise properly I’ve been still going about doing stuff.
The last 6 weeks or so I have been deteriorating, fatigue, hot flashes, pale skin, restless legs, palpitations, heart racing, hair loss, brittle nails, nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, disorientation, brain fog, breathlessness, etc. feeling the worst.

I just had a blood test done and my ferritin is 17, however for the last few weeks I’ve been taking my prescription Ferrous Fulmerate every day, as well as other multivitamins and iron, I also eat healthy. Doctors don’t seem to think there’s an issue, all my other blood results are relatively normal. I’m pretty sure I must be borderline anemic and have an absorption problem. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms at this level, or do you have any advice?

I’m too sick to work atm and I’m desperate for answers x
