So my public storage unit was broken into, I arrived to my storage unit to see that my lock was completely gone and they stole some valuable things! I filed a police report, reported it to the employees, and did the insurance claim. The insurance says if I don’t have a picture proof of forced entry then I don’t qualify for compensation. There are no signs of forced entry and they took the lock so I have no proof of a broken lock either. The public storage employee said they’ll review camera and let me know if they see anything or send to my investigator which neither has happened. What else can I do? I’m starting to feel like this was an inside job! I’m paying for insurance monthly for zero security & no real coverage!
Hi guys- Just got word from Extra Space Storage that my units were broken into..the theft is extensive and i have now lost most of my personal and professional items
This just happened and so i am still reeling from it. Can anyone please advise what i should do next as i dont have my head clear at this point.
No i did not opt into the insurance plan as i could not afford it at the time. Ive been a long time customer at this particular location and hadnt had a problem until now.
I will work on getting a police report as the manager said they could not legally share whatever cctv footage they may have..but warned me that in order to share the video the police would need to come out to the storage unit and review the footage but that oakland being oakland , they will probably never show up. Is there anything i can do to convince the police to come out and analyze the footage?
To be honest i cant move anywhere else at this time because the location i'm at was the cheapest i found. The consequence of that may be the fact that they DONT have full time security, he only works a few days a week. Is there anything i can do pro-actively to thwart/throw off a would be thief in the future, any gadgets worth looking into (perhaps something i can place on the inside)?
What is amazing is when they did message me and i ofcourse went straight away, the night shift person found my gear strewn all over the corridor and had the frame of mind to gather it up and put it in an unused locker so i was able to retrieve some of the items the robbers didnt care for. The rest will be peddled at the next flea market gathering probably..
Thanks in advance.
I know robberies in oakland is nothing out of the ordinary but i have lost a lot of my personal and professional gear.
Any thoughts on how i should approach the management tomorrow when i go back and speak with the am crew? Anything i should demand on ? Will they compensate me with any free rental for "X" amount of months or anything? Just thinking outload..
Many thanks.

Hi Ashevilian Redditors!
First, remember to stay respectful and kind :)
My unit was broken into at SmartStop in West Asheville recently. Word at the storage place is it is several of us who have been broken into around the same time. The door was left wide open to my unit, padlock removed, and door damaged. My items had been thrown all around the outside of the unit. Manager is not available on weekends. Door is still getting stuck even though they claim every time they hammer it back in place it’ll never shift out of alignment again lol
If you rent at 40 Wilmington, check your lock and unit
Police are involved and doing a group report due to multiple units! They need to know what you lost/ description, value. Please just also include name, phone, driver’s license, passport (if they have one— id not, an alternative form of ID suffices.
