In Alabama, drug addicts are imprisoned “to protect their babies.” However, they often are not allowed pre-natal care or any assistance when it’s time for the birth. This risks the lives of both mother and child. This seems to be unnecessarily cruel and provides no benefit to the developing baby except withdrawal from drugs (possibly cold turkey; the article doesn’t specify). This doesn’t make any sense to me at all - I think prisons have a responsibility to provide appropriate care to every pregnant person in their care, just as they have a responsibility to care for every incarcerated person.
