Good morning. Update from yesterday’s post. I’m the person who will have hip replacement surgery tomorrow and hubby had heart attack on 02/17.

I’m 5’3” and weigh 140 pounds. For 5 days pre surgery and several weeks post surgery I need increased protein and fiber. MINIMUM of protein is 76 grams per day and MINIMUM of fiber is 21 grams.

Breakfast was 2 huge handfuls of spinach sautéed in olive oil with what’s left of grape tomatoes, a two egg omelet with 1 ounce of Parmesan cheese, a bowl of grits and half an avocado. I topped it off with 2 T of plain Greek yogurt.

This was 33 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber so I’m on target with approx 1/3 of each at each of 3 meals.

I love cheese but don’t care for milk (thankfully). Getting all the protein I need is a challenge. Ergo the cheese in my diet. I’m a senior (74) so do need extra protein.

My appetite is not huge so am struggling a little.

Thankfully we both like all kinds of beans except chick peas. Lunch will be a protein smoothie with 1 scoop of protein powder, one cup of strawberries, water and ice.

Dinner will be a black eyed pea concoction I made last night with 2 cups of dried black eyed peas rehydrated, a 29 ounce can of crushed tomatoes, 29 ounces of water, half an orange pepper, a large carrot, 1 rib of celery, onion, garlic, box of vegetable broth, cumin, oregano, crushed red pepper flakes, s&p, and white rice. The rice is white because hubby doesn’t like brown rice unless it’s in a dish with lots of other things in it.

Somewhere today I will also drink a serving of Metamucil (pre planning for the sluggish bowels due to narcotics and reduced activity).

We work out at Planet Fitness. Typically I do 10 minutes on treadmill, 10 minutes on elliptical, 10 minutes on recumbent bike, then work on strength training with machines and free weights. I will be putting my membership on hiatus for about 6 weeks or until I’m able to get in and work on arm strength. Wish me luck!!

Good Morning. A little background info. My husband had a major heart attack on 02/17. I’m scheduled for hip replacement surgery on Monday (04/20).

Hubby’s cardiologist recommended following the Mediterranean Diet. I was already eating close to that. It’s a bit more of a challenge for him (diabetic, meat lover, CARB lover on Ozempic) which had dulled his appetite and caused him to eat mostly carbs. Major loss of protein for him.

But here’s my question. For muscle building and healing from my upcoming surgery I’m supposed to eat at least 76 grams of protein. I’m also aiming for at least 21 grams of fiber for obvious reasons due to narcotics I will be taking and reduced activity.

Today’s breakfast was one egg over a bowl of grits with 1 T of bacon bits and 2 ounces of mozzarella cheese. I also ate half an avocado and 3 strawberries.

The total protein was 23 grams ( close to a third of daily requirement) and 8 grams of fiber ( over 1/3 of daily minimum).

So, how am I doing?
