After a mysterious object appears in the town of Midwich, all of the women capable of getting pregnant end up simultaneously getting pregnant and giving birth to odd children who might pose a danger to the townsfolk.
I didn't mind this book but it didn't hold my interest as much as I would have liked. I did find the tone interesting as I expected it to be more horror or thriller than it was. It felt a lot more grounded than I expected. I liked the concept too but for whatever reason, it didn't get its hooks in me. It was still good but it wasn't great
Set in the same universe as The Giver, Gathering Blue is about a girl named Kira who has an extraordinary talent for embroidery, a talent that saves her when the townsfolk want to leave her to die because of her twisted leg. As Kira settles into her new role, she learns things in her society are not quite what they seem
I was a bit nervous for this because The Giver meant a lot to me when I first read it. Gathering Blue wasn't bad but it also wasn't anything special. I would say it is not quite as good as The Giver even accounting for nostalgia and the fact that I read the first book at an impactful time in my life, but it was still an engaging read. Very short and made for a younger age group. It is also clearly set up for a sequel which I plan to read in the future. Overall not a bad book if you want a light dystopian novel you can pick up and finish in a day or two
This book follows the Buendias family over several generations through the town of Mocando.
I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. I cant say I really enjoyed it as some parts were disgusting and painful to read but it was absorbing and beautifully written. It felt a bit like a fever dream. I especially liked how the town reflected the family and what they were going through. It was a very unique reading experience for me
A group of men (and one woman) cope with their loss of identity and security after the first world war by indulging in sex, booze, and bull fights
I enjoyed the book decently. It made its point well and I enjoyed how the bull fights reflected the character stories. Some of it was not pleasant to read but I do feel I gained some insight and it was presented in an engaging way
I really like the smell of bleach. I didn't grow up in a clean home and my home now is not super clean but I am trying to get better. I know bleach is not often the best cleaning method but it gives me that little !! Of feeling like I cleaned.
Is there a way I can incorporate that? Like a little spray of bleach or a chore that does well with bleach I can end on so I can get that accomplished clean feeling?
Sorry I know this is stupid
Darby ends up at a truck stop in the middle of a snow storm where, in search of a phone signal on her almost dead phone, she discovers a child in the back of someone's truck. The truck stop is snowed in until the morning and Darby has to try and find a way to uncover the culprit and save the girl.
I almost DNF'd this book about 60% of the way in but I didn't. And I regret that. I found it dull and at times frustrating. It felt like a chore to get through. It wasn't actively bad, which made it harder to DNF, but it wasn't worth muddling through.
