13 months ago I was a “new”runner, today I PR’d

Hi all,

I’m a dad of two monkey boy toddlers and have been working on finding my rhythm with running. I started running seriously about 11 months ago, and my weight stayed stuck around 206 lbs no matter how much I increased my mileage. On top of that, the stress from work and taking care of the family made things even harder.

So I decided to change my caloric intake (which wasn’t easy at all). That led to steady weight loss and finally allowed me to pick up my speed. At no point did I ever think I’d be able to train for a full marathon , but now it actually feels possible.

During my training, we found out my wife has breast cancer. She’s currently doing chemo, and while things are looking promising, it’s been incredibly difficult. I’ve had to step up and play the role of both mom and dad. Because of everything going on, my running came to a standstill, and I realistically had to give up my goal of running the San Francisco Marathon this July.

Even with all of this, my wife has been pushing me to go for the full marathon anyway (I’m so fortunate to have such an amazing partner). Thankfully, I’ve been slowly getting back on track. Over the last 15 days, I’ve been able to tune my speed again , and today, I hit a new PR!

Just 13 months ago, I was a brand new runner.

I know some of you might be wondering why I’m posting this here. For me, running has given me the kind of life I always wanted . becoming fit and strong. Even through all the ups and downs, it helps me keep rolling with the punches.

Despite everything life has thrown at us 4, my running, my weight loss, and speed training have helped me stay focused and grounded in my “normal” life.

Thank you, running.
