Prometheus and the elephant in the room
I was really happy thinking the deities in the Hades universe aren't similar to the myths that inspired them. At least in Hades I, the interpersonal family drama was at the forefront, and besides the occasional comment slipped in here and there, you don't need to remember that you're playing a game about Greek Gods.
I thought the second game would be the same. I hoped it would be, despite the change in tone.
Then, I get to Prometheus.
Acknowledging the cruelty done on Prometheus and his argument means opening the books to acknowledge all the other cruelty done by Greek Gods. As someone who made the mistake of reading Percy Jackson as a kid and going down a deep dive of Greek Mythology unsupervised... I have a ton of knowledge of the sheer amount of vile shit done.
We also get Dora, Arachne and Heracles hammering it in further that the gods in this universe are pretty much assholes, which while it tracks, it sours the whole "Family" theme.
Kind of hard to root for family when I remember that Melinoë is literally using the souls of mortal women as pets (Hecaba and Gale).
Somewhere along the way, I found I just stopped rooting for, empathising with, or caring about this "family." When you remember, and are reminded subtly by the fact that they are gods who have no concept of morality and view human lives as beneath them... It feels like the whole Dessandre Family Drama shtick in Expedition 33 all over again.
I'm probably in the minority, and I know I'll get the "you can't judge Greek Gods by our modern morals" argument, but if we're going to create a game where you make strong arguments that "The Gods are Cruel" you can't simultaneously expect me to accept that alongside "Care about the Cruel Gods' Family Drama."
