My insurance agent keeps telling me I should have a documented home inventory in case of a claim, but I have no idea where to start. Photos of every room? A spreadsheet? There must be a better way than going item by item.

What have you used and how long did it take?

I have a storage unit with probably 30 boxes in it from our last move two years ago. I know roughly what is in there, but not specifically. Every time I need something, I end up opening four boxes before I find it.

Has anyone found a system that actually works for this? Photos, labels, an app, a spreadsheet? Curious what has stuck for people long term.

Moving in a few months and trying to figure out the best way to keep track of everything we own. Not just for packing, but also for insurance purposes, and knowing what we have in storage vs what came with us.

Did anyone actually do a full home inventory before a big move? How did you do it - spreadsheet, photos, an app? Was it worth the effort, or did you just wing it and figure it out on the other end?
