The culture inside the gay male community is toxic

Before you attack me: No, I am not homophobic, in fact I hate homophobic people with a burning passion. I am not religious, or anything. I come from the same community myself as a bisexual guy, but despite that, I dislike it a lot. Why?

Well, simple: It's beyond toxic. I don't understand how it is so normalized not having a stable relationship, to the point that gay guys say that's something for... Straight people? Like really? You complain so much about not finding a partner, that dating apps are soul draining etc etc yet you engage in those same behaviors that you criticize. Also the narcissism from many of them, and the ridiculously high standards. Even if you are traditionally handsome (in the way of having beautiful facial features) if you don't comply with the archetype that the typical gay guy wants, for example, extra masculine or muscular to the point that you look roided, the. you are nothing for them.

And of course, If I call out these behaviors I get many types of insults: I've been told that I was a gaycel, for literally saying that the lifestyle of most gay men is unsustainable if you actually want commitment? Ironically I get a lot of attention because of my looks, but I don't feel like there's something real behind everyone. Or that I am homophobic, even though I am pointing out the problems inside the culture, not bashing people for being themselves. It's a type of victimism that is applied in the wrong context.

And tbh I know that I will get bashed or probably this post will get deleted because most people won't read beyond the title, but if you skipped most of this: Yes, I believe the gay male community culture is toxic and promotes a hypersexualization of the male body to the same standards that straight guys do to women, yes I believe it is unsustainable for the long term if you actually want something stable (the amount of old gay guys who chase young people is insane), and yes the only thing in which conservatives are right is about the "lifestyle" narrative, as soul crushing as this might sounds, and the voices that go against these behaviors get shunned.

So what will actually happen to SWE?

I can divide the content in two, there's no in-between:

  1. Hopeposting: Narratives in the lines of "the golden era of SWE will come, AI is not sustainable, there's no ROI etc etc"

  2. Doom posting: "SWE is dead, I cannot get a job, we are fucked, AI will improve"

I actually need hardcore data to conclude one or the another. I see many people stating that FAANG is still hiring juniors or even interns but at the same time? Lots of layoffs. There's no coherent narrative.

The only thing for certain is that I have never expected this profession to be in such a bad state, ever

Are most people realizing the problems with current technology?

I don't know if it is me, but I see many people who are jumping into the trend of digital minimalism, anti-social media, etc... In my friend group we used to talk about it before and pretty much all agreed about the misery that social media and current technologies are bringing. Most of us take pictures together but we don't tend to post them on social media, it's mostly to keep the memories.

On YouTube (it might also be because of my algorithm, it is very well trained though) I also see this trend of Zoomers embracing a new traditional way of technology, and many video essays in which explain that technology used to be fun, but not anymore. I think AI is just accelerating this view.

Now, of course I am not referring to "everyone" in my home country I know it's not like that, but I see this discourse is increasing ever more.

I've got my "illumination moment" when I read the Epstein files and found how close Big Tech Billionaires were with him, and with the speech that Peter Thiel gave about "doing politics without people ever realizing it"

Grindr in Germany

Am I not the only one who finds Grindr in Germany discouraging? Like I have no idea how Germans even try to meet other people. There were many times they've written to me but suddenly stopped texting after sending pictures or something. Some even respond after 3 weeks (this has happened several times). I've had more encounters with foreigners than actual Germans, but even them are difficult, especially if they've lived in Germany for a couple of years.

I wouldn't say that I am not attractive because strangers in parties and nightclubs tend to compliment me by saying that I am good looking and it is easy for me to engage with them. So, I don't really know what I am lacking.

I am so tired of social media and this all AI hype

Whenever I open social media, reddit or anything honestly I tend to constantly stumble with like the most terrible shit. People on Twitter are fighting about well over anything, labelling whole groups of people based on what a couple of inadequate individuals say online. About AI I also feel anxious, because it's the main excuse of why Juniors are not being hired anymore. It also ruined the joy that I had with software engineering, because I love analysis and problem solving but right now it seems the new current workflow is essentially outsourcing all your coding skills and intelligence to an advanced and useful autocomplete? Don't get me started on the ever increasing problems that will envelope in society because of what is happening right now, like... Using LLMs for creativity isnt like relying on the average? You are not creating anything original.

Edit: On top of the attitudes that I see in common subreddit about CS. Like it's completely discouraging

Holy fuck. I've been reading more about them, particularly about those that are behind the curtains (z.B: Thiel) and I am disgusted. I've also been reading The Empire of AI written by Karen Hao and to say that these people are not insane and that there's no cult in Sillicon Valley is an outrageous statement. I am sick of these people that see the values of other human beings so low that they are betting on AI to replace humanity in all fields possible, including creativity.

Also, can I talk more about how they are so ugly? Like look at Altman, the Amodeis, Zuck, Bezos, Musk, etc, like they look like zombies. Even when young. No wonder about the bullying.

And tbh I also feel so much disappointment on the fact that I looked after them so much as role models but they have ended up being terrible people. That's probably the biggest source of my disappointment.

I don't know why no one has talked about it. No solution a government can give will work, simply because the current culture doesn't favor that.

I don't know if it's only me or what, but around the globe and particularly western societies there's a pattern that I can see. Consumerism and hyperindivualism, massified by social media. Social media is creating a monoculture that favors the aforementioned stuff mainly because it is easily the most marketable thing since it directly appeals to our worst emotions, like selfishness, envy, and anger. There's no doubt why the most recommended content inside social media is the one that divides us more, either from the people that we already know or those that we don't even know.

If we see in older history, societies used to evolve organically. People were always in communities, but there were also places that allow people to share their ideas together, which eventually made societies evolve. How is that possible now if we essentially only listen to our own biases? No societies were so individualistic in the past as it is today.

I don't know if I am explaining myself correctly. I have a lot going through my mind, so I would like this post to be a place for debate so we could further develop this idea better

I will be called bitter because I am criticizing a "fun trend", but if you really need to ask AI to draw an ugly scribble that looks straight out from MS Paint, then... Like... Better draw it yourself? At this point I have no idea what AI is trying to democratize.

For me it's quite clear that AI will bring cultural decadence. I think there's no way to avoid society to get into that point because we all are using social media despite the fact that it's objectively dangerous to our psychology.

My advice is that, be your own subject of change. Empower local artist, avoid using AI and try to engage into self reflection and critical thinking. Don't jump on trends (I have always found trends stupid, with all due honesty) you cannot change the world but each individual change that you do on your own will create an avalanche of other changes, not only in your life but perhaps outside. Yes, AI bros are annoying and stupid, but there's no point in engaging with them if they are not even capable of arguing with good faith by using their own brains. So there's no point in engaging with a meat based bot.

I see everybody on reddit complaining about the job market, but that is a problem that is happening around the globe. In Europe is like that, in Latin America too, in the US too, like it's insane that is happening to so many regions and yet no one is looking at the broader picture. The value of a degree doesn't hold that much anymore so going to the university is not as good if you want to get a job. I also see that the housing crisis is increasingly worse everywhere you see. On the internet there are news of younger generations isolating themselves from the outside and looking up to toxic influencer as Clavicular et al as role models.

I'm not mentioning climate change nor AI on purpose. No one knows what will happen with the latter, but it would be catastrophic either if we reach that monstrosity called AGI (which, If I am honest with you, I would prefer to slow down technological progress so we can fix the problems that society as a whole has instead of betting everything in a technology that will and it is causing more problems that solutions) Climate change... Well, the same idiots who are betting in AI also believe that it will solve climate change. We are really fucked.

Oh, also the wars, the fact that the billionaires from the USA are literal pedophiles and there were no protests against it... It is important for me to remark that I've barely seen any some form of mobilization against the elites by part of the masses, as if we were like, conditioned to just believe this is how the world should be.
