Not sure if this is a pattern question or no, but it seemed the best fit. I've been trying to knit Paterson by Susan Crawford, but I am really having trouble with the right amount of stitches. I knit quite lovely, so I went 2 needle sizes down (2,75 --> 2,25mm). I swatched, as the pattern has very little positive ease (±2cm/0,8 inch) and with those needles I met gauge in width (35 st in 10 cm) after washing and drying.
When I cast own however, I quickly realised my knitting was way too wide. I recast on, now a smaller size, and my gauge was still completely off (316 st being ±115 cm...) even though I knit the swatch in the round, on the same needle size.
Should I size down again, or should I buy thinner needles?
Kind of poor pictures, but ifk how else to illustrate. I am aware that after casting on and knitting some more rows colourwork it might be less wide, but I doubt it will shrink the required 18 cm...
I also could not find this in the faq or previous posted stuff. Other people who made the project did not seme to have my issue https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/paterson
