I am looking to visit Germany around Oktoberfest (end of September to first week of October). My ancestry is German and I have visited 4 times before with my mother when I was a child. She grew up in Mannheim, though I was raised in North America.

I am planning to spend some time in Munich for the festival, then heading towards Austria, and finishing in Vienna. I am looking for travel suggestions off the beaten path near Munich and heading towards Austria.

I have been to the KIng Ludwig Castles, Oberammergau, Salzberg,

This will be my first travel to Germany without my mother and my German is non-existent (a disappointment to my mother after I gave up on German school at 6 years old).
