My 16 month-old son has never been a great sleeper, but we are having a whole lot of new issues lately. We sleep trained using Ferber at 7 months and that led to pretty easy bedtime (he went in awake and fell asleep in minutes) and mostly better nights with much longer stretches and fewer wakes. He moved to his own room about 8 months and took to it fine.

Night weaned from bf at about 11 months which saw some solid sleeping through for a few weeks. Bottles started to creep in for night wakes (we never really bit the bullet and sleep trained those) but they've been gone for months now as it stopped helping him settle. He likes a drink of water at night though!

He has virtually all his teeth now and is in daycare so has had periods of teething/being sick and these have led to more wakes at night. (Daycare naps can vary wildly, mostly he's asleep at 11.45 and might stay down for an hour, an hour and a half or rarely 2 hours +.) Some rare nights recently with only one or two quick wakes, sometimes longer ones with much wailing. We generally go in and pick him up to soothe him, which I know probably doesn't help in the long term.

Bedtime routine has been solid for months. Bottle/sometimes bath/book/songs but in the past week bedtime has got more difficult and varied. Sometimes not going down easily at his usual time (just before 7) and then waking frequently. It feels like he's probably overtired on these occasions if daytime sleep was not great but I don't think starting bedtime at 5-something is feasible! He also often wakes at 5-something in the morning which is not ideal and leads to very long wake windows before his daycare nap. I'd love 7-7 but would settle for 7-6 if there was solid stretches of sleep before 6!

Can anyone tell me what we're doing wrong? Many things I'm sure, but a few tips on what we could change to help him and us get better sleep would be welcome.
