Evaluate the extent to which economic factors contributed to the development of political tensions in the United States from 1820 to 1860.

The north and south has always been split in many ways, such as their economic systems, with the north mainly doing manufacutring work, and the south being an exporter of cash crops being free labor and the south utilizing slaves. The second, which caused a major pointof debate. With the mexican american war, these debates grew. The msxican session was a huge point of debate for americans as it brought the US more land, where the debate of wheter slavery shuold be allowed burgeoned.
Despite some debates about tarriffs between the north and south and the free soil movement, because of slavery related developemnts such as the wilmot proviso, and the compromise of 1850, and the election of 1860, which took center stage in american politics at the time, economic factors was not the main point of debate and source of political tensions from the period 1820 to 1860, the main factor that developed political tensions was the issue ofslavery.

The most pressing concerns that caused tensions in the period from 1820-1860 was mainly related to slavery. For example, with the introduction of the wilmot proviso, which suggested a ban on slavery in the newly gained land from the mexican cession, southenrereners were enraged, and quickly kiled the bill. The Kansas nebraska act opened the possibility of slavery above the missouri line, through fee voting . This enraged northerners. And heightede political tensions, which culminated in people moving in to kansas just to fraudulently vote to rig the outcome. Violence broke out between the two factions. This shows how debates on slavery increased political tensinos to the point of voilence, diplomacy was not going to work when it came to solving the slavery issue. Violence was again put on full display when senator charles summers was brutally caned by a stouherner for his harsh anti slavery speecch. This shows how tensions rose to tehe point where violence was neccesary. A cause for these increasing tensions was the vastly contrasting idealogies held by the diffeernt region. While the northeners saw the institution of slavery as evil, suthenrers saw slavery as an positive good. They made racial arguemtns, stating that the black man was genetically inferior, and how subservience was his naturla state, these world views contributed to the political tensions, which excabertated slavery debate.

Poltical tensions rose to its peak during the 1860 election. Where northnern presideal canidadte, ABREAHAM LINCOLEN won the election without a single southern vote. This scared the south, because they knew they had no power in the union, even if all of the south banded together, they were electorally out numbered by the norhtenr states. This caused the peak of politicla tensions, as the south suceeded. One of the main issues that contributed to this was that they wanted to protect slavery. The effect, being a confederacy being founded on ideas of racism, their constitution stated how the confedaracy would be run on the principle that the black man was less than the white man.

Despite issues concerning slavery taking up most of the debates, some underlying economic causes did funnel the slavery debate. For example, the free soil party was an anti slavery party. HOwever, their underlying motives was to protect the economic labor system of the north, free labor. Their contribution in the debates surrounding the wilmot proviso, and the comperomise of 1850, which constituttes slavery debates, but the underlying reason was ecnomic.
Some other ecnomic factors not related to slavery also played a limited affect in contributing to political tensions. The south generally advocated for lower tarrifs and the north advocated for higher. This was caused by the fact that THe north wanted higher tarrifs to curb european imports, so the northnern primaryily manufacturing economy could sell their products easier.Hwoever the south , who relied on trade with europe liked to keep tarrifs low to keep good trading relations with europe, additionaly, they often bought tools to farm their plantation from euroep. This is an economic factor that led to some tensions between the north and the south, although the scope of this was limited and overshadowed by slavery.

In conclusion, economic factors did not contribute to the majority of poltical tension, it was the debates on slavery.
