Career Situation, any advice or common experiences?

So I am a 33 year old male, originally from Southern California. I have worked in accounting since about 2017, working my way up from AP clerk roles to Staff Accountant type roles, nothing sexy but good money and stability. I worked through COVID and was really struggling mentally and finally broke down in 2025 and quit my new job working for a City in SoCal. I told myself I was done with accounting and moved to NV to live with family and start over.

I have been here about a year and have done a 6 month stint at the post office and now have been working as a sub teacher for about 4 months. I don’t know if I have the stones to truly start over and I maybe acted impulsively.

I know now I want to return to CA as the job market here is just terrible and I feel like I’ve grown personally. My problem now is that my resume is a mess with gaps and the two roles that are not accounting related are at the top of my resume, which is leading me to believe I’m getting rejected despite having a lot of experience. Anyone have any advice? I’m essentially trying to move back to CA, find a way through with my clunky resume, and get back in at the level I was at. Am I just screwed? Should I start over?
