This is a case that I have been following up where Mr. Singh Mahal pleaded guilty in a Calgary house-rental fraud case after renting the same property to 9 families in January 2023. He pulled the fraud ba advertising the property in kijiji and facebook marketplace, by physically showing the property, signing an agreement and collecting deposit and/or first month rent. After more than a year of court appearances, he admitted to 15 counts of fraud and forgery under sections 380, 366 and 368 of the Criminal Code. He was ordered to repay thousands of dollars to the victims and complete months of community service. Although he claimed to have no income and was given a year and a half to make restitution, he has not made any payments and is now disputing the restitution recovery process in an apparent effort to further delay repayment. The case raises serious concerns about how lenient the court system can be toward financial fraud and how difficult it can be for victims to recover their losses.

The recent Tigray election that brought Dr. Debretsion to power underscores a basic right: regions should choose their own leaders. Regardless of views on the TPLF or fears of war woth Abiy, that act of self-rule for regions matters! TPLF has demonstrated that the Tigray region will not accept Abiy's puppets. All other regions should learn to be electing representatives independent of Abiy!

In the Amhara region, however, leadership is widely seen as made up of puppets handpicked by Abiy’s government. That strips the region of real representation and accountability. Leaders who were perceived as standing for Amhara interests, like Dr. Ambachew, were killed.

Amharas should not accept puppet leadership. Its people deserve the same right as Tigray or a party like TPLF, who can stand to the interest of the people to independently elect leaders who truly represent them.
