A meeting has been set up to talk to one of the legislators in Oregon regarding OSBN and their abuse of power in their roles investigating and determining discipline.

Is there any other nurses that want to share their story? Too often OSBN is getting away with excessively punitive, cookie-cutter decisions that do nothing to protect the public, but encourage a culture where nurses live in fear of being complained about or making a mistake.

Punishments by OSBN are very inflexible and often the board does not (appear to) even know the long-term ramifications on the nurse of the decisions made. Life-altering decisions are made with only few minutes discussion. If you don't agree with their proposed punishment they will schedule an administrative hearing heard by a supposedly neutral judge who works for the state, as your only recourse. OSBN will hire a lawyer from the district attorney's office to represent their interests. Nurses on the other hand have to fork out $400/$500 per hour for a lawyer, who may or may not care if they help you succeed in fending off an unfair decision with $5,000-10,000 retainers. OSBN also now has a lot of additional funds since they raised fees recently that was projected to bring in 8 million more dollars in revenue, some of which was to hire more investigators( and presumably fund legal fees). ref: https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2025R1/Downloads/CommitteeMeetingDocument/291780

It's time to hold them accountable for their actions/ decisions.

My main requests will be : (1.) require mediation is the default choice if you don't agree with their proposed decision. Why shouldn't discipline include things that would actually be rehabilitative, if needed or a true benefit to Oregonians? Mediation is less costly, less adversarial and can even the imbalance of this 7-8 person aggressive nurse board verses a nurse.

If mediation fails then an administrative hearing, can be the next option.

Also, (2.) will be advocating for a independent review board if a nurse feels the board is being unfair/ unjust... this could be retired nurses or people in the community maybe social worker type background to address complaints on OSBN processes. So far, only the governor and the legistature has indirect ability to oversee the board. This is very dangerous for nurses who end up in board cross hairs due to a complaint.

PM your story if you'd like. Also, any other suggestions on what to highlight to the legislator are welcome. Thank you!
